Marathon with artificial heart 41. BMW Berlin Marathon Inlineskating: who would think 5 years ago that he would run a marathon someday. Back then the only thing he was struggling for was his life.

  1. My story.

In June 2009 because of the abrupt cardiac insufficiency I had to get an artificial heart (Heartmate II) implanted in my body and carry it until a donor heart is found (if found at all)

Marathon with artificial heart: What is an artificial heart?

Artificial heart or, more precisely defined, left venticular assist device in my case – is an electromechanical turbine (circulatory device) that supports a failing heart. My heart stays in my body and the turbine is connected to the left chamber of my heart. The turbine is supplied with electricity through the the long-lasting battaries. The battaries and the controller, which I carry in my backpack, are connected to my heart with the cable that goes through my belly.

There are different manufacturers of artificial hearts and what I have is called Heartmate II der Firma Thoratec.

  1. My life today with an artificial heart

I must say that I was 45 years old at that time. It was a difficult time with all the consiquences like physical weakness, depression, complications etc. After torturing myself and my family for a long time I realized that I have now a new chance to live, yes – to LIVE and not just to exist. Slowly I have started going to office again so that I do not think about my sickness all the time. These days I also go to fitness studio, ride my bike or inline skates, in winter I go skiing or ice skating. The only thing I cannot do, when talking about sport, is swimming. But I am optimistic about that. Where there is a will there is a way!

  1. What I do

  • Since 3 years I help Deutschen Herzzentrum Berlin (one of the world´s famous heart hospitals), where I was operated, to get the related organisations like police, fire department, emergency service, doctors, security companies and hospitals, to know about artificial heart
  • With a support of Thoratec – manufacturer of the artificial heart I also go abroad for congresses, held speach about my experience both in german and in english
  • On May 28, 2014 I participated in a Company run in Berlin on inline skates.
  • On September 27, 2014 I will present my project “Marathon with artificial heart“. I was inspired by the Wheelchair and Handbiker Marathon 2013. I was so impressed by the will, power and achievement of these people, that I said to myself “I will do it too”. And so I came to the idea to run a 41. Berlin Marathon Inlineskating. This is a big challenge even for a healthy man, but it doesn´t stop me. As already said, where is a will there is a way. It is interesting that while a healthy body gets more oxygen during the physical strain provided by higher heartbeat, my artificial heart is pumping constantly the same amount of blood which means I get the same amount of oxygen, regardless of the bodily efforts. I will see if my body works for my for such a long distance. In any case, I want to show you with “Marathon with artificial heart” that I have the whole life in front of me and there is no time to complain. Of course, if I have enough oxygen, I would be very happy to cross the finish line.

Come and cheer for me!

I dedicateMarathon with artificial heart” to all people who were and are by my side,

who supported me with words and deeds, friendship, love, power, spirit and faith during last 5 years.

  1. The purpose of the “Marathon with artificial heart”:

  • to call up to all desperate and hopeless to fight and keep on living! Use your chance! Exjoy every moment! Your live goes on! And to all who are well, support me with my projects!
  • to point the alternative of artificial heart to transplantation, to motivate the patients with artificial heart to live their lives more intence and never give up
  • to ask people to consider organ donation. Think about appying for Organ Donor Card, may be some day you will need an organ too. I had a bone marrow and organ donor card myself and donated my blood several times a year but unfortunately with my heart sickness I cannot be a donor anymore. More about organ donation here.
